BOXES

PORTFOLIOS

CONTAINERS

Years ago, I taught myself to make boxes. Along the way, I acquired my go-to instruction book, Constructing and Covering Boxes by Cindy and Tom Hollander. That led to many hinged lid and clamshell boxes, and eventually to a workshop at Arrowmont and, most recently another workshop, The Elegant Box, at Penland.

A mainstay of my work in boxes is constructing portfolios for photographs and prints. This gives me opportunity to explore handmade papers and elegant book cloth, drawers, magnet closures, mica inlays, and cutouts for easy handling of prints.

Now I am exploring container boxes, three-dimensional structures to showcase photographs. These boxes are sometimes made as keepsake cremation boxes for departed loved ones.
